Help Us Roll 1000 Hippos

A simple tool that will empower millions of women... "Why hasn't someone thought of this before?"

What if you could help empower a woman -- and give her children an educational opportunity -- merely by changing a simple daily chore? The Hippo Water Roller is an astoundingly simple technology that will change the lives of millions of women and children in rural communities.

The hippo water roller has an innovative design that allows the transport of water more easily and efficiently by placing the water inside its ?wheel.? A full hippo roller holds 200 lbs (90 kg) of water ? five times the amount possible using traditional methods. But because the weight is borne on the ground, it has an effective weight of just 22 pounds (10 kg) allowing children to easily manage a full roller over most types of terrain.

The hippo roller is a major improvement on the toxic, re-purposed gasoline and paint containers that are typically used to collect water in rural communities. Traditional methods of transporting water include carrying heavy five gallon buckets of water on the head. These heavy loads place an enormous strain on the skeletal frame, causing long-term damage and premature ageing.

The practical and durable design of the hippo roller allows more water to be transported more efficiently than traditional methods. A single hippo carries enough water to meet the basic needs of five people per day. It also gives them access to better hygiene and living conditions. In addition, hippo rollers make it possible for families and schools to collect enough water and grow their own vegetables using the drip irrigation cap.

A Small Design Can Change the World
Quite simply, the hippo roller is just a smarter way of transporting water. Developed in South Africa in 1992, over 42,000 hippo rollers have been delivered to women and families in need.
The hippo roller, with it?s large drum capacity, frees women and children from the daily chore of hauling water for their households. Fewer trips to collect water means women and children can spend their time on productive educational and economic opportunities. What a beautiful gift to give to a woman. What a blessing to their community.
